Shorter Dollar General under construction

Shorter area residents are ecstatic as the community will soon have its own Dollar General store. Work on the new retail center began last week at the site of the former Mr. P’s building located at the corner of First and Main St. and is set to be open in early October.

Upon first learning of the company having interest in the area, Shorter officials expressed generous support for the retailer and welcomed the effort. The plan for the development won speedy and unanimous approval of the site location from the Shorter Planning Commission and Town Council.

The new store will mean a boost in tax revenue for Shorter and Macon County as residents transition towards spending more money locally. Shorter Mayor Willie Mae Powell said, “We are thankful for this visible sign of progress for our community. One of the main goals for Shorter is to bring businesses that allow our residents to shop close to home. This new store is just the first in several planned steps towards completing that goal.”

Town officials are also celebrating the project, because no incentives were necessary to secure the deal. The added tax revenue will provide a significant boost in needed revenue for Shorter and Macon County. The Dollar General announcement comes on the heels of the recent expansion effort at Halla Visteon Climate Control Systems and the completion of the long awaited natural gas line into the Shorter Tech Park.

These projects are examples of successful efforts to diversify the Shorter economy and the attraction of new private sector investment in the area. The new developments provide further evidence of earned confidence from the investment community that Shorter is good for business. Efforts to attract other developments are still underway and will be announced in the coming weeks.
